From a nursing home for officers to a First Class Hotel

The Hotel Am Jägertor owes its name to the oldest remaining city gate in Potsdam, the Jägertor or Hunter’s Gate, located just opposite of the hotel. The gate itself – erected in 1733 following the design by Peter von Gayette – was named after the Royal Hunters Yard closeby. It was leading towards the pheasant hatchery of the Elector.

Around the end of 19th century the city wall was sacrificed for urban expansion. A broad avenue was developed with buildings in neo-classical architecture, including the building known today as “Hotel Am Jägertor”.

Since the construction the building was used as a nursing home for officers. Before the 2nd World War it was turned into a small guest house and later a small hotel. Until the end of the former GDR in 1989 the Hotel Am Jägertor belonged to a group of state-run hotels (VEB Reisebüro der DDR).

In August 2000 the first class Hotel Am Jägertor has been re-opened, since then the elegant city residence is one of the finest adresses in Potsdam.
